From Thursday June 14 all football fans eyes will be on Russia when the 2018 World Cup kicks off but according to Panini circulation manager Henry Smith independent retailers should be warming up now in preparation for strong sales of stickers and trading cards.
“World Cup packet sales have grown during every tournament since Mexico 1970,” he said. “In 2002 sales of stickers and trading cards amounted to £6 million; in Brazil it was £41 million and we are hoping to hit £50 million this year.”
Little wonder then that he describes the 2018 World Cup as “the independents opportunity of the year, explaining: “The World Cup is the biggest collection by far. It outsells all collections by four to one.”
Christopher Lynn, NFRN account manager from Panini distributor Marketforce, agrees. Four years ago independent retailers sold a massive 12,250,000 World Cup packets, netting themselves £7,300,000 in RSV.
“Each independent sold an average of 588 packets of stickers and four starter packs, delivering £350 in RSV in just a two to three month window,” he added.
This year the official 2018 Adrenalyn XL Trading Card Collection kicked off on February 22 while the Official FIFA World Cup sticker collection makes it debut on March 22, with 100 pack counter display units, 682 stickers to collect and five sticker packets.
Both sticker and trading card collections are on full SoR and Mr Lynn has promised a weekly distribution into wholesale so packs are always available. However, any member experiencing problems are advised to contact NFRN Connect.
Massive marketing activity will support these launches, including TV advertising, newspaper sampling, cover mounting, social media and a Panini bus tour which will visit selected retail outlets.
Interest in the collection will heighten from Saturday April 21 when a sticker album is given away free in the Sun. Again, this will be supported with TV advertising.
Strong sales are expected throughout May, even though there are still four weeks to go before England kick off.
“Panini has taken learning from each tournament and we intend to make 2018 bigger and better than before,” said Mr Smith.
Panini is encouraging independent retailers to keep the cards on sale until October to allow football fans to complete their collections.
