The NFRN is urging the Scottish government to rethink plans to introduce a £50 renewal fee for personal alcohol licences.

National President Mike Mitchelson said: “Independent retailers are already hard-pressed as they operate in an environment of rising costs and falling margins so an alcohol renewal fee is both unwanted and unnecessary.

“Our concerns were registered when we responded to the Scottish government’s consultation on the introduction of a renewal fee so we are disappointed that it appears to be pushing ahead with this plan and we would urge it to think again.”

Currently, there is an initial £50 fee to apply for a personal licence, but no fee for a renewal application. The Scottish government believes that such a fee would help Licensing Boards across Scotland cover the cost of administration.
