NFRN National President Mike Mitchelson has today (Monday October 22) written to MPs urging them to support an amendment to the Offensive Weapons Bill which seeks to give retail workers greater protection.

The proposed change from Delyn MP David Hanson will make obstructing or threatening a worker carrying out age verification on corrosive or bladed products an aggravated offence.

Mr Mitchelson wrote: “Across the range of age restricted products, from tobacco and alcohol to the sale of blades, it is the ID challenges and refusals of sale that trigger the most problems, with physical and verbal abuse being the all too common outcome when retailers simply do what the law requires.

“I would, therefore, urge you to support the amendment and help take a step to protect the independent retailers who are at the heart of your – and every – constituency.”

All NFRN members have also been encouraged to contact their own MP and ask them to support the amendment which is being debated in the House of Commons later today.
